Grocery shopping in Australia is getting more expensive, and many households are looking for easier ways to cut down their weekly spend.

The problem is, comparing prices across Coles, ALDI, and Woolworths can be time-consuming. One store might have cheaper fruit and vegetables, another might have a better special on pantry items, and another could work out cheaper overall for your list.

That’s where Smart Split in WiseList can help.

Instead of manually checking supermarket prices one by one, Smart Split helps you work out when it may be cheaper to split your grocery shop across multiple stores.

If you’ve ever wondered whether shopping at more than one supermarket is actually worth it, this feature is designed to make that decision easier.

What Is Smart Split?

Smart Split is a WiseList feature that helps compare your grocery list across supported supermarkets and shows when splitting your shop could help you save money.

It looks at comparable items on your list and checks whether some products may be cheaper at:

Coles

ALDI

Woolworths

If a split shop works out better than buying everything from one supermarket, WiseList helps organise your grocery list into separate store-based lists.

“Smart Split Savings Woolworths”

“Smart Split Savings Coles”

“Smart Split Savings Aldi”

This makes it easier to see where savings may be available without needing to compare everything yourself.

Why Grocery Price Comparison Matters

Many Australians already know that grocery prices can vary between supermarkets.

Some stores may have lower prices on fresh produce, while others may have better value on pantry staples, snacks, household items, or weekly specials.

The challenge is that most people don’t have the time to:

check three different supermarkets

compare item by item

calculate the cheapest overall combination

organise what to buy from each store

That’s why grocery comparison tools can be useful — especially for families, busy households, and shoppers trying to stay on budget.

How Smart Split Works

When you build your grocery list in WiseList, Smart Split checks comparable pricing across supermarkets.

If it finds that splitting your list could help reduce your total grocery cost, it will generate a Split by Store option.

For example:

your milk and fruit may be cheaper at ALDI

your cereal or pantry staples may be cheaper at Coles

another item may work out better at Woolworths

Instead of leaving you to figure it out manually, WiseList helps break it down into a clearer shopping plan.

How to Use Smart Split in WiseList

Using Smart Split is simple.

Step 1: Update your app

Make sure you are using the latest version of WiseList.

Step 2: Open your Grocery List

Tap Grocery from the bottom menu, then tap List at the top of the screen.

Step 3: Look for the Smart Split notice

If WiseList finds a cheaper split shopping option, you will see a message that says:

“Split by store to save $xx”

This will appear below your grocery list items.

Step 4: Tap to compare your options

Tap the message to open your Smart Split results.

You’ll then be able to compare:

the cost of shopping at one supermarket

the cost of splitting your list across stores

Step 5: View your split shopping plan

WiseList will then show your separate store-based lists, so you can see what to buy from each supermarket.

What Does “Smart Split Total” Mean?

Smart Split Total is the estimated total cost of your grocery shop when using the split shopping option.

This gives you a quick view of how much your groceries may cost if you buy items from multiple supermarkets instead of doing the full shop in one place.

It can help you decide whether the extra stop is worth the savings.

What Does “Split Stores” Mean?

Split Stores is your store-by-store shopping breakdown.

It shows which items are best purchased from each supermarket based on available comparable pricing.

This helps make multi-store shopping easier and more organised.

Rather than scrolling through one long grocery list, you can view your shopping by store and shop more efficiently.

Benefits of Using Smart Split

1. It can help reduce your grocery bill

If some items are cheaper at different supermarkets, Smart Split can help highlight where savings may be available.

Even small weekly savings can add up over time.

2. It saves time comparing prices

Instead of switching between multiple supermarket apps or catalogues, WiseList helps bring the comparison into one place.

3. It makes split shopping easier

If you do decide to shop across more than one supermarket, Smart Split helps organise your list into store-specific checklists.

4. It can help with budgeting

Knowing your estimated total before you shop can make it easier to plan your weekly spending and stay within budget.

5. It helps you shop more intentionally

Instead of guessing which store “feels” cheaper, you can make decisions based on the grocery items on your actual list.

Why Smart Split May Not Appear

You may not always see the “Split by store to save $xx” message in WiseList.

This may happen when:

your grocery list is currently cheapest at one store

there are not enough comparable items in your list

WiseList has not found a cheaper split shopping option for that particular shop

In many cases, adding more grocery items to your list may improve the comparison results.

Is It Always Worth Shopping at Multiple Supermarkets?

Not always.

While splitting your shop can sometimes reduce your total grocery cost, it may not always be the most practical option depending on:

how far apart the supermarkets are

how much time you have

whether you’re doing a quick shop or a full weekly shop

delivery or click and collect preferences

That’s why Smart Split can be useful — it gives you the information so you can decide whether the savings are worth the extra stop.

For some people, convenience may still matter more. For others, even modest weekly savings can make a real difference over time.

Who Smart Split Is Best For

Smart Split can be especially useful for:

families managing weekly grocery budgets

busy households

price-conscious shoppers

people who already shop at multiple supermarkets

Australians looking for easier grocery comparison tools

If you regularly compare supermarket prices or try to shop specials, this feature can help make the process faster and more organised.

Shop Smarter with WiseList

Grocery shopping doesn’t need to feel like a guessing game.

If you want an easier way to compare your grocery list across Coles, ALDI, and Woolworths, Smart Split can help you see when a split shop may work out cheaper.

Instead of manually comparing prices and organising separate lists yourself, WiseList helps do the heavy lifting for you.

The next time you build your grocery list, check whether Split by Store appears — you may find a smarter way to shop and save.

Ready to Compare Your Grocery List?

Use WiseList to build your grocery list, compare supermarket prices, and see whether Smart Split can help you save on your next shop.

Download WiseList and start shopping smarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Smart Split in WiseList?

Smart Split is a WiseList feature that helps compare your grocery list across Coles, ALDI, and Woolworths to show when splitting your shop may help you save money.

How do I find Split by Store in WiseList?

Tap Grocery, then List. If WiseList finds a cheaper way to shop, you will see a message saying “Split by store to save $xx” below your grocery list items.

Why can’t I see Split by Store?

You may not see it if your list is already cheapest at one supermarket, or if there are not enough comparable items in your grocery list.

Does Smart Split compare ALDI, Coles and Woolworths?

Yes, Smart Split is designed to help compare supported grocery items across ALDI, Coles, and Woolworths where comparable pricing is available.

Is shopping at multiple supermarkets worth it?

It depends on your list, time, and location. In some cases, splitting your grocery shop across multiple supermarkets may help reduce your total grocery cost.

The post The Smart Split Strategy: How to Shop Coles, ALDI and Woolworths Smarter first appeared on WiseList.

Many people think a pantry list and a grocery list are the same thing — but they serve completely different purposes. Understanding how each works (and how they complement each other) can transform the way you shop, cook, and manage your household.

If you want to save money, avoid duplicate purchases, and stop food waste, you need both systems working together.

What Is a Pantry List?

A pantry list is a real time record of the food you already have at home. It tracks items stored in your:

Pantry

Fridge

Freezer

Cupboards

A digital pantry list shows your inventory instantly so you always know what’s available before planning meals or shopping.

What Is a Grocery List?

A grocery list is a shopping checklist. It tells you what to buy on your next trip to the store.

Unlike a pantry list, it changes frequently and is based on:

Meals you plan to cook

Items running low

Missing ingredients

Household essentials

Key Difference Between Pantry Lists and Grocery Lists

Pantry List

Grocery List

Tracks what you already own

Tracks what you need to buy

Long term inventory system

Short term shopping tool

Updated after shopping

Used during shopping

Prevents duplicate purchases

Prevents forgotten items

Why You Actually Need Both

Using only a grocery list means you might buy items you already have. Using only a pantry list means you’ll forget what you need to buy.

When combined, they create a complete shopping system:

Check pantry → see what you already have

Plan meals → identify missing ingredients

Generate grocery list → shop efficiently

This workflow is how organised households reduce waste and control grocery spending.

How Pantry + Grocery Lists Save Money

Most overspending happens because people don’t track their inventory.

Without a pantry list:

You rebuy items you already own

Food expires before you use it

You shop based on guesswork

With a synced system:

You only buy what you need

You use what you already have

You avoid impulse purchases

Why Digital Lists Work Better Than Paper

Paper lists can’t update automatically. Digital lists can.

A smart system connects your inventory and shopping list so when you add items to meals or use ingredients, everything updates in real time.

Benefits of digital lists:

Accessible anywhere

Shared with family

Editable instantly

Synced across devices

The Smart Way to Manage Food at Home

The most efficient households follow this system:

Pantry List → Meal Plan → Grocery List → Shop → Update Pantry

When these tools are connected inside one platform, managing food becomes almost automatic.

Best Setup for Modern Households

The ideal solution isn’t choosing between a pantry list or grocery list. It’s using both together inside one integrated app.

Look for a platform that offers:

Pantry tracking

Shopping lists

Meal planning

Expiry tracking

Household organisation

Download the Pantry List App today and stop guessing what’s in your kitchen – track, manage, and save instantly.

Shocked by Woolies' fish oil price, I saved $50 with WiseList at Coles. A win for smart shopping!

In the midst of rising grocery prices and the cost of living crisis, every dollar saved is a small victory. My recent trip to Woolies was a stark reminder of this. I went to pick up some fish oil, recommended by my GP for cholesterol management. Normally, I’m on top of checking prices with the WiseList app, but this time I slipped – it was just one item, after all. Imagine my shock at the checkout when the price was $79.5!

Thankfully, I had WiseList. A quick scan showed me that Coles had the same Swisse fish oil 400 pack for $29.5. That’s a $50 difference, just like that! I grabbed it from Coles instead, saving a significant amount.

This experience wasn’t an isolated incident. Especially with items like vitamins, which can be pricey, the savings add up quickly. WiseList has become an indispensable tool in my shopping routine, helping me navigate through the unpredictable pricing of supermarkets and manage the ongoing cost of living increases.

Being proactive with price checks, especially for regular purchases, is more crucial than ever. With WiseList, I’m reassured that I’m making the most out of every shopping trip, ensuring I get the best deals available. It’s a practical way to combat the rising costs and keep our budgets in check.

Unveiling the hidden sugars and additives in "healthy" foods, this article guides through smart, label-savvy supermarket shopping for true nutritional value.

The post The Hidden Truths of Supermarket ‘Health Foods’ first appeared on WiseList.

Navigating the supermarket in search of healthy options often feels akin to traversing a minefield, beset with misleading marketing claims. Products such as flavored yogurt and granola bars loudly tout their health benefits, boasting of live cultures or nutrient richness. However, a closer examination frequently uncovers a less favorable narrative: these items are frequently burdened with added sugars and artificial flavors, which erode their purported advantages.

Even items that seem to be healthier alternatives are not exempt from critical evaluation. Fruit juices, for instance, remove the fiber present in whole fruit and amplify the sugar content, leading to a beverage that is high in calories. Similarly, sports drinks, though designed for athletes, provide little benefit to the average consumer other than an excess of sugar and artificial additives.

The snack aisles maintain this trend, with veggie chips offering an illusion of vegetable content while equating to regular chips in terms of fat and salt levels. The deli section is similarly misleading—pre-made salads are often soaked in calorie-dense dressings and laden with added sugars and processed meats.

This paradox extends to a variety of so-called ‘health foods’:

Diet Sodas: Despite their zero-calorie appeal, they are filled with artificial sweeteners and additives, potentially leading to adverse health effects.

Instant Oatmeal Packets: Though convenient, they are often packed with unnecessary sugars and sodium.

Bran Muffins and ‘Healthy’ Baked Goods: Despite the health halo of bran, they frequently conceal high amounts of calories, fats, and sugars.

Cereal Bars: Advertised for breakfast or snacks, these bars are often just candy bars in disguise, rich in sugar.

Processed ‘Low-Fat’ or ‘Fat-Free’ Foods: Removing fat often means adding sugars and artificial ingredients, negating any health benefits.

Bottled Smoothies: Missing the freshness and whole-fruit nutrition, these beverages are often more about sugar and preservatives than actual fruit.

Gluten-Free Snacks: A gluten-free label doesn’t automatically mean healthy; many of these products are rich in sugar, fat, and calories.

Faced with this complexity, health-conscious shoppers can take proactive steps. Reading labels carefully is an essential first move, going beyond calorie counts to examine the full ingredient list and nutritional content. Generally, foods with fewer and whole ingredients are preferable.

For a more advanced strategy in healthy shopping, consider exploring WiseList+. This service enables users to check Health Scores and compare supermarket prices with a simple tap, offering a streamlined approach to making informed food choices.

Take a shopping list to the supermarket and only buy what’s on the list.

Plan meals in advance and add the ingredients to your shopping list.

If you have very young children, ask a friend to mind them while you go shopping. You’ll have more time to compare prices and won’t fall victim to ‘pester power’.

Set a budget for your shopping trip, withdraw the cash from an ATM and only take this money with you when you go shopping.

Try growing your own food at home.

Eat a meal or snack before you go to the supermarket. When you’re not hungry, you tend to buy less food.

Buy in bulk when things are cheaper. Meat can be cut into smaller portions and frozen so you can use it as you need it.

If you usually shop each week, try shopping once a fortnight to get into the habit of using all the food in your pantry before buying more.

Swap the brand names you always buy for generic products when you can.

Check the ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates on food so you don’t waste money buying things you won’t use before you have to throw them out.

Supermarkets usually promote the items at eye-level, so check the shelves above and below for cheaper alternatives.

Meat can be expensive, so buy less of it and try making more meals without using it.

If you’re looking to make your grocery list even smarter, consider these tips for upping your shopping game, without sacrificing time or money.

Get rid of unhealthy foods
Before you write your grocery list, go through your kitchen inventory, including your fridge and freezer, and get rid of all those super unhealthy foods! Toss out processed, sugary snacks, unhealthy “convenience foods” and microwavable junk. Not only will this help make space in your kitchen, it will catalyse the beginning of a more healthy shopping cycle.

Separate list into categories
Don’t just write down items on your list at random. Instead, organise it by making categories based on food group; ie. fruits and vegetables, dairy, etc. By grouping items together, you will make your way through the store faster, without having to double-back. Also, this will give you less time to roam the aisles in search of snacks, which is exactly what the store wants you to do.

The post Tips for making your grocery list first appeared on WiseList.
